  • UN Reports June as the Lowest Global Food Price Index in Over Two Years

    The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported that the world price index, which monitors the prices of globally-traded food commodities, reached its lowest level in over two years in June. The decline was attributed to the reduced costs of sugar, vegetable oils, cereals, and dairy products. The FAO stated on Friday that the price index averaged 122.3 points in June, compared to a revised 124.0 points in the previous month. Initially, the May reading was recorded as 124.3 points. This new figure marks the lowest level since April 2021, indicating a 23.4% drop from the all-time peak in March 2022, which followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

  • Natural Rubber Production Surges by 8.3% in FY23; Consumption Soars by Over 9%

    Rubber production and consumption in India witnessed a steady growth in the 2022-23 fiscal year compared to the previous year, according to the latest data released by the Statistics Consultative Panel of the Rubber Board. The panel, consisting of representatives from various sectors of the rubber industry, convened in Kottayam to analyze the performance of the natural rubber (NR) sector both domestically and globally. During the 2022-23 fiscal year, natural rubber production in India increased by 8.3 percent, reaching 839,000 tonnes compared to 775,000 tonnes in the previous year. Similarly, the consumption of natural rubber also witnessed a positive trend, rising by 9 percent from 1,238,000 tonnes in 2021-22 to 1,350,000 tonnes in 2022-23.

  • National Water Mission Partners with Indian Plumbing Association to Enhance Water Use Efficiency

    In a significant move towards achieving a water-positive India, the Bureau of Water Use Efficiency (BWUE), under the National Water Mission (NWM) of the Ministry of Jal Shakti, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Plumbing Association (IPA). The MoU aims to raise awareness and promote various water conservation measures, including rainwater harvesting structures, low-flow fixtures and sanitary ware, grey and black water treatment, as well as water audits of built environments. The signing ceremony took place today, with Archana Varma, Additional Secretary & Mission Director of the National Water Mission, Ministry of Jal Shakti, and Gurmit Singh Arora, National President of the Indian Plumbing Association, representing their respective organizations.

  • Karnataka Plans to Launch Arabica Coffee Branding Initiative and Promote Coffee Eco-Tourism

    Karnataka, known as the largest coffee producer in India, has unveiled plans to focus on branding the Geographical Indication (GI) tagged Arabica varieties cultivated in the districts of Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu. Additionally, the government aims to boost coffee eco-tourism in the state. Presenting the state budget for 2023-24, Chief Minister Siddaramiah highlighted the unique flavor and aroma of the Arabica coffee varieties found in Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Bababudanagiri, all of which carry the GI tag. The government intends to undertake measures to promote and brand Karnataka coffee while encouraging coffee eco-tourism. Karnataka dominates the coffee production landscape, accounting for more than two-thirds of the coffee produced in India.

    The Government of India, in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), successfully concluded the International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH) 2023 after three days of engaging discussions. The conference, held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, brought together key stakeholders and experts to explore the potential of green hydrogen and its role in transforming India's energy landscape. Over the course of the conference, more than 2700 delegates, 135 speakers, and experts participated in seven plenary sessions, 16 technical sessions, and four panel discussions, all focused on the green hydrogen ecosystem. The event aimed to foster collaboration, exchange knowledge, and drive innovation in the field of green hydrogen.
