  • Kerala Woman Earns 5 Lakh Through Cage Fishing Using Govt Subsidy; Wins CMFRI Award

    In Ernakulam, about 40 metres from the Periyar River's banks, close to Moothakunnam, you can find a large number of cages housing numerous fish species. Smija M. B., 38, who regularly catches and feeds the fish, looks after and protects them. As part of the Blue Revolution, the Department of Fisheries developed its cage fishing initiative in 2018. The project intends to encourage more farmers to enter the field, especially women and members of reserved castes/tribes, while world fish production is declining as a result of climate change. Kerala received about 500 cages as part of this.

  • Rahul Gandhi Meets Farmer Leaders in Haryana; Discusses MSP & Other Agriculture Issues

    On Monday, as Congress' Bharat Jodo Yatra marched on its 115th day and witnessed an all-women walk, Rahul Gandhi met with farmer leaders and discussed various farmer-related issues including a guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops. Gandhi and former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda met with farmers and kin of the farmers who died during the large-scale protest against the Centre government seeking abolishment of three controversial farm laws in 2020-21.

     

  • Centre Government Issues Rs 64 Crore to Punjab for Crop Diversification Plan

    In order to reduce the amount of water-guzzling paddy and encourage farmers to grow maize, millets, and cotton instead, the central government has issued a Rs 64 crore crop diversification plan (CDP) in Punjab. The programme is regarded as an expansion of the Crop Residue Management (CRM) plan, which was established four years ago for the in-situ and ex-situ management of paddy straw in an effort to deter farmers from burning rice stubble, which poses serious environmental and health risks. While the Central ministry of agriculture has sanctioned Rs 34 crore for subsidized machinery and tools to facilitate the cultivation of crops other than paddy and Rs 30 crore for extension services and demonstrations, the state government has set a target to reduce 10 lakh hectares under paddy during five years. 

     

  • NABARD Launches Model Millet Project in Various Districts of Assam

    To mark the International Year of Millets 2023, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has kicked off various initiatives to increase millet production in the north-eastern state of Assam. Dr. CV Ratnavathi, Director of the Indian Institute of Millet Research (IIMR), Hyderabad, Vincent MD, CGM of SBI, Guwahati, Rajesh Bora, Zonal Manager, Central Bank of India, BC Bora, Member of the Assam Agriculture Commission, and other dignitaries attended a Millets Day organized by NABARD at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalashetra on Tuesday.

     

  • Kerala Issues Advisory Following Bird Flu Outbreak; Begins Culling Operation

    As a preventative action against bird flu, the rapid response team of Kerala's animal husbandry department began culling birds at several places in Thiruvananthapuram. With the help of ward members, up to 3000 birds will be killed within one-kilometer radius of Perunguzhi junction ward. As a precaution, bird eggs, meat, feed, and droppings will also be disposed of. The Kizhuvilam, Kadakkavoor, Keezhattingal, Chirayinkeezhu, Mangalapuram, Andoorkonam, and Pothencode panchayats are included in the department's surveillance zone declaration. Following the death of 200 ducks due to avian flu on a farm in Perunguzhi, preventative precautions have been taken.
