Sugar Industry Calls for Action: Government Contemplates Ethanol Production Plan
The Indian government is considering permitting sugar mills to produce ethanol using their surplus B-heavy molasses as feedstock amid a comfortable sugar supply and stable prices in the market. The government's sudden ban on December 7 last year, followed by its reversal a week later, resulted in an overstock of B-heavy molasses for mills. Therefore, sugar mills are holding excess stock of more than 7-8 LT of B-heavy molasses, produced before the ban. Thus, the industry had accumulated B-heavy molasses for ethanol production. Now that the crushing is coming to an end, the sugar industry has been demanding the government permit the use of available excess stock of B-heavy molasses for ethanol production. Further, the industry has been requesting the government to authorize the utilization of the available surplus of B-heavy molasses for ethanol production. This proposal is currently being considered. -
