  • USDA Extends Climate Funding to Small Farmers to Reduce GHG Emission

    The USDA's efforts are part of a larger Biden administration goal to reduce U.S. emissions, with the Environmental Protection Agency estimating that farming accounts for 10% of total emissions. According to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, one of the program's primary goals is to enable more farmers to serve the growing consumer market for sustainably produced food. "We want to encourage farmers and producers to use these practices more quickly, and we want the market to recognize and value [their] efforts," he said. The funds will be used to fund 71 projects ranging in size from $250,000 to just under $5 million, to assist small and historically underserved farmers in adopting and evaluating lower-emission farming practices.

  • Telangana's Tandur Red Gram Receives Geographical Indication (GI) Tag

    The Tandur Red Gram of Telangana has received Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Now, Telangana has its sixteenth GI product registered. It must be noted that on September 24, 2020, Yalal Farmers Producers Company Limited, an FPO, submitted GI Application No. 706 for the Tandur Red Gram. With this, Telangana has registered its sixteenth GI product. The GI registration procedure was facilitated by Prof. Jaya Shankar Telangana Agricultural University, who also assisted Yalal Farmers Producers Company Limited with application guidance, research, and technical data. Pigeon peas are a local crop that is mostly cultivated in Tandur and surrounding portions of the state in the rainfed regions.

  • IARI Develops New Drought Tolerant Variety of Chickpea

    The Indian Council of Agricultural Research – Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), also known as the 'Pusa Institute', in partnership with Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV) Jabalpur, Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Gwalior and ICRISAT, Patancheru Hyderabad, developed the drought-resistant and higher yielding chickpea variety "Pusa JG 16". The terminal drought is a major issue and can sometimes result in a 50–100 per cent loss of yield in the drought-prone areas of the Central Zone, which include Madhya Pradesh, the Bundelkhand Area of Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Southern Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.

    The certification of “Kasturi Cotton India” along with its branding and traceability has been undertaken by Cotton Corporation of India Ltd and TEXPROCIL, sponsored by Govt. of India as they signed a Memorandum of Understanding on December 15. The association is set to help Indian farmers to get their comeuppance in the global markets. Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Textiles, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Commerce & Industry,  yesterday, participated in the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Cotton Corporation of India Ltd and TEXPROCIL to regulate the branding, traceability and certification of “Kasturi Cotton India”.
