Crop rotation is a method of producing different crops in the same field that is planned ahead of time. Continuous cropping, which involves cultivating the same crop in the same field every year, is the total opposite of crop rotation.
Crop rotation improves soil fertility, optimizes soil nutrients, and lessens insect and weed pressure.
Consider a farmer who has planted a field of corn. He may plant beans after the corn harvest is ended because corn consumes a lot of nitrogen while beans restore nitrogen to the land. A simple rotation may consist of two or three crops, whereas more intricate rotations may include a dozen or more.
