If you look attentively, you may notice "water" in the term hydroponics: hydro means "water" in Greek. Using hydroponics often implies that plants grow in nutrient-rich water, however, they can also grow on gravel, coir, wool, or other materials. The term ponics also has a Greek root, ponein, which means "to labor or toil."
