An inclined level, such as a hillside, that has been planted into a succession of flat, ascending platforms that follow the lateral contours of the terrain and gradually recede as one climbs uphill. In hilly or mountainous terrain, graduated terraces are frequently constructed to create level fields for cultivation. Terracing is the process of creating terraces out of natural terrain.
