  • Jammu & Kashmir: Vegetable Production Expected to Exceed Rs 5000 cr Per Year

    The 'Promotion of Vegetables/Exotic Vegetables under Open and Hi-Tech Protected Cultivation' project is one of 29 approved by the Jammu and Kashmir administration after being recommended by the UT Level Apex Committee for holistic development of Agriculture and Allied Sectors in J-K. "Commercial vegetable farming has been identified as a key tool in achieving economic prosperity of the farming community through a significant income boost," said Atal Dulloo, Additional Chief Secretary (ACS), APD. He went on to say that J&K has a distinct advantage over the rest of the country in that it can cultivate vegetables all year and grow almost every vegetable crop, including exotic ones that are in high demand and have export potential.

    Lumpy skin disease is a viral infection that primarily affects cattle. It is spread by blood-feeding insects such as flies and mosquitoes, as well as ticks. It causes fever, nodules on the skin, and death, particularly in animals that have never been exposed to the virus. Rupala lauded ICAR's efforts in developing the indigenous Lumpi-ProVac vaccine against lumpy skin disease (LSD) in animals. He stated that this MoU will also ensure large-scale production of Goat Pox vaccine for India's livestock sector's future needs.

    On Sunday, Jaishankar told members of the Indian diaspora in Austria's capital that India can grow millets, which can help meet the world's growing food demand. The government announced a series of millet-related promotional activities across the country as the International Year of Millets (IYM) begins. "Millets are far healthier for all of us than the cereals, rice, and wheat we eat every day. It was the most common food in our societies until it was displaced. It uses a lot less water and emits a lot less carbon. In today's world, where there is concern about food shortages, millet provides a completely different value proposition. In fact, for every five kilogrammes of wheat grown in India today, one kilogramme of millets is grown and consumed," Jaishankar explained.

     

  • Coffee Exports Rise to 4 lakh tonnes in 2022

    Shipments increased 18% over the previous year's $945 million in dollar terms, while exports increased 26% in rupee terms to Rs 8,762 crore (Rs 6,984 crore in 2021). During the calendar year, the per unit value realized increased by 23% to Rs 2,18,923.82 per tonne, up from Rs 1,77,406.89 the previous year. Overall shipments were 4 lakh tonnes, up more than 2% from the previous year's 3.93 lakh tonnes, according to permits issued by the state-run Coffee Board. Shipments of instant coffee increased by 10% to over 1.34 lakh tonnes, up from 1.21 lakh tonnes in the same period last year. This included increased re-exports of more than 99,513 tonnes (91,960 tonnes). Lower grade coffee is imported from countries such as Vietnam and re-exported after being converted into value-added instant coffees.
