Adulterant

Adulterants are substances that are added to food, medication, or other products to make them less effective or unsafe. To make honey more cheap, high fructose corn syrup is sometimes used as an adulterant.

Adulterants are nearly typically introduced to save money; they are made up of components that are cheaper than the original product. Chicory becomes an adulterant when it is added to coffee without the addition being mentioned on the label. Water may also be an adulterant if it's used to dilute a medication to make it less pricey (and be less effective). Adulterant comes from the Latin word h meaning "to falsify or alter."
