Aquaculture

The term aquaculture combines the Latin aqua-, which means "water," with culture, which is also derived from a Latin root and means "agriculture" or "cultivation." Originally, this word primarily applied to fish farming. Aquaculture may now be practiced by cultivating seaweed and algae, as well as rearing shellfish such as oysters and scallops. Aquaculture now accounts for around half of all fish and shellfish consumed by humans.
