The term "fodder" refers to more than just cattle feed. We use the term to refer to different types of feeding that do not involve actual food. Soldiers who are most likely to be killed in battle are referred to as cannon fodder, a term derived from the days when armies employed canons instead of drone aircraft delivering missiles.
