Sharecropping

It is a system of farming that developed in the South after the Civil War, when the landowners many of whom formerly held slaves, lacked the cash to pay wages to farm labourers. The system called for dividing the crops into three shares, one for the worker, one for the landowner, and one for whoever provides seeds, fertilizers, and equipments for the farm.
