Smother Crop

Smother crop refers to a highly dense and rapidly growing plant species that are intentionally grown to effectively suppress weed growth by out-competing them for essential resources like sunlight, water, and nutrients. The primary characteristic of an ideal smother crop is its ability to compete strongly with weeds while minimizing competition with other cultivated crops.

After fulfilling its purpose, the smothered crop can be incorporated into the soil as green manure, along with any surviving weeds. Smother crops are a prime example of utilizing biological pest control methods.
