Primary tillage is deeper and more thorough, whereas secondary tillage is shallower and often more selective in place. Primary tillage, such as ploughing, produces a rough surface finish, but secondary tillage, such as that necessary to provide a decent seedbed for many crops, produces a smoother surface finish.
