Any of a sizable group of submicroscopic infectious agents that are typically thought of as extremely complex, nonliving molecules, lack a semipermeable membrane but typically have a protein coat around a genetic material core (RNA or DNA), can only grow and multiply inside of living cells, and are responsible for a number of serious diseases in people, animals, and plants.
