Windbreak

Windbreaks are comprised of one or more rows of closely spaced trees or shrubs strategically planted to offer protection to neighbouring agricultural fields against the wind. Their purpose is to mitigate excessive cold and soil erosion in the area. Windbreaks are commonly seen as hedgerows surrounding farm fields, but can also be constructed using synthetic materials like large canvas panels. In addition to reducing wind speeds, windbreaks may serve other purposes such as separating farms from roads or highways or collecting snowdrifts to provide water for otherwise arid farmland during spring snowmelt.
