Amid nationwide lockdown and growing number of Coronavirus cases in India, here comes a good news for farmers. The Modi-led BJP government is set to transfer around Rs 15,000 crore to nearly 75 million farmers from 1st of April under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. Under PM-Kisan yojana government gives farmers cash benefit of Rs 2000 per year in three equal instalments.

To recall, Modi government’s ambitious PM-Kisan yojana was launched last year with the aim to provide financial support to farmers in the country.

Government’s latest decision will be helpful to the farmers and their families during the nationwide lockdown, because of which they are not able to sell their produce in the market.

A government official said that “We are preparing a list of farmers who will be paid the next instalment. And we have started sending these lists to their respective states validation. After that we would transfer the money. We are ready to transfer it from 1st April, when the instalment gets due”.

This small financial help will be of great help to cultivators who are struggling to sell their produce in current lockdown.

The official further told that “Timing of crediting this instalment is important. At this time, farmers need money not only to purchase agriculture inputs for planting summer pulses but also to tide over the lockdown period”.

So far, the centre has distributed nearly Rs 54,000 crore benefiting around 87.1 million farmers across the country.

The official added that “We have received data of 100 million farmers and currently we are verifying them with the states for linking it with their Aadhaar number. We are quite hopeful to saturate the list in few months”.
