Central Soil Salinity Research Institute Celebrates 52nd Foundation Day

Central Soil Salinity Research Institute (CSSRI), Karnal celebrated its “52nd Foundation Day”.    In his Foundation Day Lecture, the Chief Guest, Dr. S.K. Chaudhari, Deputy Director General (Natural Resource Management), ICAR emphasized on giving special focus on the management of salinity and water quality problems in the climate vulnerable Districts of the country. Dr. Chaudhari stressed on the issues of excess iron and other heavy metals in some salt-affected areas of India that warrants the attention of salinity researchers.

Central Soil Salinity Research Institute (CSSRI)Karnal celebrated its “52nd Foundation Day”.    In his Foundation Day Lecture, the Chief Guest, Dr. S.K. Chaudhari, Deputy Director General (Natural Resource Management), ICAR emphasized on giving special focus on the management of salinity and water quality problems in the climate vulnerable Districts of the country. Dr. Chaudhari stressed on the issues of excess iron and other heavy metals in some salt-affected areas of India that warrants the attention of salinity researchers.

He urged for identifying the remunerative non-food crops for the productive utilization of huge amounts of municipal and industrial waste waters. The DDG accentuated that while several technologies have been developed for managing the localized impacts of salinity, a lot needs to be done to manage the salinity on landscape and regional levels. Dr. Chaudhari emphasized on providing the farmers in the salt-affected areas with the viable high value land use options with focus on horticultural crops. 

Dr. Gurbachan Singh, Former Chairman, Agricultural Scientists’ Recruitment Board stressed on giving more attention for bringing the waterlogged saline soils under cultivation through a stakeholder approach. 

Earlier,  Dr. P.C. Sharma, Director, ICAR-CSSRI, Karnal highlighted the Institute’s salient achievements including total area reclaimed, role of institutional technology and science in supporting the national and state policies and overall farmers’ development. 

Dr. Y.P. Singh, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CSSRI-RRS, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh was conferred the “ICAR-CSSRI Excellence Award” for the Year - 2018. 

A total of 250 scientists and other staff members were present during the occasion.
