Pig Farming Attracting Youths In Punjab

Dr. H.K. Verma, Director Extension Education told that pig farming, nowadays is gaining ground among masses after breaking apart the age old taboo of being occupation of the downtrodden. In the present situation, pig farming means piggy banking as more profitability. Government is also trying its best to popularize it further among the young generation and small farmers. Dr Verma further told that livestock sector has plenty of options to adopt like poultry farming, dairy farming, fish farming and pig farming, feed manufacturing, value addition of livestock produce etc. a person can adopt as per his likes and resources available.

Dr. S.K. Kansal, Head, Department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Extension Education said that interest of our youths and farmers in pig farming can be well judged from numerous training applications we are receiving at extension wing of the University. Dr Jaswinder Singh, Coordinator of this training revealed that pig farming training at our University provides complete package to the trainees covering breeds, feeding, management of piglets, boar, sow, vaccination, disease prevention, value addition, integration with other farming techniques along with hands on training for handling and measuring body parameters .

Dr Singh further informed that an association of progressive pig farmers of Punjab is running under the aegis of GADVASU providing updated technical knowledge. University also organizes one technical seminar on the last Thursday of every month.
