The lack of space in urban areas poses a major challenge for city residents. Although many aspire to have a kitchen garden, fitting more than 5-6 plants in balconies or porches is often not feasible. Square foot gardening provides an efficient and organized method to make the most of limited space.

The concept of square-foot gardening was first introduced in 1981 by Mel Bartholomew in his book of the same title. It involves dividing a cultivation area into smaller square sections to create a compact, intensively planted vegetable garden.

Why Square foot gardening?

A Beginner’s Best Friend – Unlike traditional farming methods that require extensive land preparation and complex maintenance, square-foot gardening offers the freedom to explore gardening on your own terms. It allows beginners to experiment and enjoy growing vegetables in a hassle-free manner.

  • Space Saver, High Yield – The strategic planting method in square-foot gardening makes it possible to grow a variety of vegetables in a compact space. This approach produces significantly higher yields compared to conventional gardening.

  • Say Adios to Weeds! – The dense planting arrangement not only boosts productivity but also suppresses weed growth, helping to maintain healthy and disease-free soil.

  • Water Conservation Made Easy – Thanks to its efficient layout, square-foot gardening minimizes water usage. Additionally, leftover kitchen water from washing vegetables or rice can be repurposed for watering plants.

  • Low Maintenance, High Convenience – The raised bed design eliminates the need for constant weeding and upkeep. The clearly defined square sections make it easy to manage and identify individual plant plots.

The Technical Concept

The area for preparing the bed should be 4 feet x 4 feet size with a depth of 6 inches to 12 inches based on the type of vegetables whether it is shallow rooted or deep rooted like carrots and radishes. The size of the bed can be longer than four feet but ideally it is recommended to keep the size within 4 feet for easy management. The bed is then divided into grids of 16 one foot squares and each square is planted with a specific crop, allowing for efficient use of space, easy management, and reduced waste.

Look for the sun when setting up the garden

Choose a sunny location that gets at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day, as most vegetables need plenty of sunlight to grow and yield well.

Soil Selection

Square foot gardens do not have any fancy soil requirements but it is advised to add compost to the garden soil.  Bartholemew in 2006 discovered a perfect combination for soil mix, also called the ‘Mel’s Mix’ which consists of 1 part of peat moss or coconut coir, 1 part of vermiculite and 1 part compost mixed together that gave him good results. Proper drainage is also essential to avoid waterlogging, which can harm roots and encourage fungal diseases.

Plant Selection

The typical ratio of planting is 1, 4, 9 or 16 plants based on their mature size. The plants in every square can be of different harvest time in order to encourage a variety of crops in succession. Once a crop is harvested another crop can be grown immediately allowing crop rotation and discouraging growth of weeds and pest infestation. Companion planting is also another key to a successful square-foot garden. Plants that help pollinate each other should be grown together.

Also, such plants that help boost nitrogen in soil like legumes should be grown in alternating growing seasons to maintain the quality of soil. Plants like mint, turmeric, and basil act as natural repellents that help keep pests away.

Taller plants must be grown in the northern direction to avoid shading of shorter plants.

Plant Spacing Guide

  • 1 plant per square: Leafy greens like broccoli, cabbage, knol-khol and  kale

  • 4 plants per square: Medium veggies such as pepper, tomatoes, brinjal

  • 9 plants per square: Onions, beets and radishes

  • 16 plants per square: Carrots and lettuce

Tips to keep your garden happy and healthy

  • Regular watering - watering is vital for a thriving square-foot garden. Keep the soil evenly moist but avoid waterlogging. The frequency will vary based on factors like climate, sunlight, and plant growth stages.

  • Mulching - Spread a thin layer of organic mulch around your plants. This practice helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, regulate temperature, and enrich the soil as it decomposes.

  • Organic fertilizers for even growth - During the growing season, nourish your plants with a balanced organic fertilizer, following the package instructions. This ensures they receive the nutrients needed for a bountiful harvest.

  • Timely inspection - Keep a close watch for pests and diseases. Early detection is crucial to preventing infestations. Opt for organic solutions, such as insecticidal soap or neem oil, whenever possible.

Square foot gardening is an innovative and sustainable way to grow a variety of crops in a small space. By following these guidelines, you can enjoy a bountiful harvest with minimal effort and resources. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced gardener, this method is a practical and rewarding approach to urban gardening.
