The Ministry of Food Processing Industries, in response to the United Nations General Assembly's declaration of 2023 as the International Year of Millets, is organizing the Millet Mahotsav nationwide.
The purpose of this event is to raise awareness about the nutritional benefits, value addition, consumption, and export potential of millets. Millets have been a staple food for over 500 million people in Asia and Africa and are recognized for their ability to generate livelihoods, increase farmers' income, and ensure global food and nutritional security. India, being a leading producer of millets, holds an approximate 41 percent share in global production.
In support of the "Tamil Nadu Millet Mission 2023" and the recent inclusion of additional districts (Namakkal, Tirupur, Coimbatore, Erode, and Pudukottai) into the two millet zones established by the Tamil Nadu Government, ASSOCHAM is considering a two-day National Conference with an expo. This conference aims to create opportunities for buyers and sellers to meet and further enhance the production and consumption of Finger Millet and Pearl Millet.
To raise awareness about the significance of millet farming, ASSOCHAM, in collaboration with the Ministry of Food Processing Industry (MOFPI) and with the support of institutions such as IIMR, TNAU, CODISSIA, CFTRI, NIIST, NIFTEM, and other research and development organizations, is organizing a two-day National Conference cum Exhibition on Harnessing & Strengthening the Value Chain of Millets in Tamil Nadu. This event, scheduled for June 16th and 17th, 2023, at the CODISSIA Trade Centre in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, will feature food demonstrations, buyer-seller meetings, and aims to promote the production, processing, value addition, entrepreneurship, international outreach, and consumption of millets.
