Physiologically, the liver is an extremely vital organ that performs a plethora of functions such as detoxification, digestion, storage of various vitamins and minerals and proteins, and plasma synthesis. Therefore, a healthy liver is imperative in ensuring a healthy life. World Liver Day, observed on the 19th of April every year, is to raise awareness about various liver-related diseases. The occasion serves as an important reminder to make healthy lifestyle choices.

The theme for 2024 World Liver Day is, “Keep your liver healthy and disease-free.” Notably, there has been a significant rise in liver-related diseases which has resulted in the deaths of millions. The surge in the death toll is also an outcome of grave unawareness. So, this year’s theme emphasizes the significance of regular check-ups for your liver to identify any abnormality at the earliest. Fatty liver can affect any group and can turn out to be extremely fatal, therefore, regular check-ups are important in identifying any issue before it is too late. Experts, Doctors and Individuals from hepatological fraternities or medical institutions come forward to educate the public about liver related diseases via various podiums.

Furthermore, alcoholism, diabetes, and obesity are the three most contributing factors resulting in liver-related diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), liver diseases claim 4% of deaths globally. Moreover, as per the Global Hepatitis Report of 2024 released by WHO, hepatitis causes 1.3 million deaths every year. Such is an alarming concern. The liver is an extremely resilient organ; however, any complexity can turn out to be life-threatening.
