About Manipur Legislative Assembly

Manipur was colonized by the British in 1891 and merged with the Dominion of Government of India on October 15, 1949. Manipur had an Assembly prior to the merger that was elected on the basis of adult franchise in July 1948. It was made up of 53 people.

Manipur became a part of C State upon the adoption of the Indian Constitution on January 26, 1950. The Union Territories (Laws) Act of 1950 went into effect on April 16, 1950, and the Chief Commissioner was appointed as the State's Administrator. On 6 May 1953, a Council of Advisors with five members, three from the valley and two from the hill areas, was formed to assist the Administrator, and it continued to function until 1957, when the Administrator was elected to the Territorial Council.

The Territorial Council was elected in the same year under the Union Territories Act of 1956. In June 1963, the Territorial Council was transformed into the Territorial Legislative Assembly, which consisted of 30 elected and 2 nominated members. The Assembly began operations on July 23, 1963.
