Bhagirath Choudhary, Minister of State, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare of India, emphasized the vital role of agriculture at the Millionaire Farmer of India (MFOI) Awards 2024, currently underway at the iconic IARI Grounds, Pusa, New Delhi. Speaking at the event, organized by Krishi Jagran, co-hosted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and sponsored by Mahindra Tractors, Choudhary remarked, “Our country is an agriculture-centric nation. Agriculture is its backbone, and farmers are its soul. Until agriculture develops and farmers prosper, our country cannot become a developed nation.”
Choudhary advocated for unity in agriculture and the adoption of modern technology to overcome challenges. “Agriculture should not be approached with a sense of division but with a sense of unity, supported by the adoption of modern technology. Until farmers achieve prosperity and happiness, our nation cannot transform into a developed country.”
He praised Prime Minister Modi’s initiatives since 2014, such as the Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme and increased Minimum Support Prices (MSP), along with agricultural scientists' efforts to develop high-quality seeds. “These efforts are truly commendable,” he stated. The minister envisioned agriculture as the largest industry in the coming years. Reflecting on India’s Green Revolution, he stressed the need for advancements in pulses, oilseeds, fruits, and flowers to achieve self-reliance in these sectors.
Highlighting soil health concerns, Choudhary pointed out the dangers of excessive chemical usage. “Our land is not inherently sick; we have made it sick through indiscriminate use of chemicals. It’s time to adopt sustainable practices to restore the health of our soil.” He urged farmers to embrace natural farming, starting small and expanding over time, assuring that productivity would stabilize and improve in subsequent years.
Choudhary also stressed water conservation, citing an example from Rajasthan where millet crop maturity time was reduced from 120 days to 70 days, thanks to advanced seed development by scientists. “This not only conserves water but also benefits farmers economically. Adopting advanced farming practices is key because when farmers prosper, the nation prospers.”
On technology adoption, he highlighted the importance of creating awareness about innovations like Drone Didi. He remarked, “Farmers need to be educated on how to use technology effectively. It is our Prime Minister’s dream to equip every farmer with modern tools, techniques, and best practices.”
Choudhary called on progressive farmers to share their experiences and knowledge with their fellow farmers. “As successful farmers, it is now your responsibility to uplift others by imparting the wisdom you have gained throughout your journey.” He also emphasized the importance of the Jan Jagran Abhiyan to inspire and motivate farmers to adopt advanced farming practices (Unnat Kheti).
Bhagirath Choudhary presented awards to progressive farmers for their exemplary contributions, inspiring others to embrace innovation and success in agriculture. The MFOI Awards 2024 serves as a platform to unite leaders, innovators, and policymakers, reaffirming agriculture’s critical role in India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation by 2047.
