In Maharashtra, Gudi Padwa, sometimes referred to as Samvatsara Padvo, is the first day of the new year. The Marathi New Year is named after two words: "gudi," which refers to a Hindu Lord Brahma flag or emblem, and "padwa," which refers to the first day of a lunar phase. The harvest season officially kicks off with the festivity. People in Maharashtra celebrate Gudi padwa with great zeal and fervor.
The Marathi New Year will be observed this year on March 22, 2023, the first day of the nine-day Navratri festival.
Hindu legend holds that Lord Brahma introduced days, weeks, months, and years when he created the universe on the day of Gudi Padwa. Some believe it to be the day when King Shalivahana returned to Paithan and people raised the flag in celebration of his victory. Gudi is essentially seen as a symbol of good triumphing over evil.
Marathis decorate gudi by placing neem leaves and a sugar candy garland on top of a bamboo stick that has been tied with a piece of fresh linen. The rod is then put in a container made of silver or bronze.
People get up early on this day to decorate their homes with lovely rangoli patterns and Gudi. Marathis perform Gudi puja to celebrate their new year and then go on Puran Poli to Shrikhand with their loved ones.
