In a major step toward advancing the fisheries and aquaculture sectors, the ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (ICAR-CIFE) has licensed two innovative technologies to the Co-operative Fisheries Federation (COFFED) in Patna, Bihar. The technologies, aimed at enhancing the sustainability and productivity of the fisheries industry, were officially handed over during a ceremony on January 8, 2025.
Dr. Ravishankar C.N., Director of ICAR-CIFE, highlighted the significance of such partnerships, emphasizing that they are key to shaping the future of India’s fisheries sector. The collaboration not only strengthens the pathway from research to market but also fosters the growth of sustainable practices within the industry.
The first licensed technology, the Catfish Hatchery and Rearing of Seed under the Three-Tier System, represents a breakthrough in sustainable hatchery management and seed rearing for catfish farming. This innovative technology, developed by Dr. C.S. Chaturvedi, Dr. W.S. Lakra, Dr. Arpita Sharma, and Dr. A. Landge, has already been patented and has the potential to transform catfish farming practices in India.
The second technology, FishANUre, is a DIY solution that allows farmers to convert fish waste into organic manure. This innovative approach, created by Anurag Singh, Dr. Arpita Sharma, Dr. Martin Xavier, and Shubham Soni, addresses waste management challenges while supporting sustainable agriculture. The technology has also been granted a trademark and offers a promising solution for environmentally friendly farming.
The signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was witnessed by key officials from ICAR-CIFE, including Dr. Arpita Sharma, Dr. S.P. Shukla, and Dr. Swadesh Prakash, alongside the COFFED team led by Rishikesh Kashyap.
This collaboration is set to benefit local fisheries in Bihar, improving livelihoods and promoting further innovations in the aquaculture sector.
