The ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes (ICAR-CIRB) has developed a urine-based pregnancy test for ruminants, which is a significant achievement for livestock management. This innovative diagnostic tool, introduced earlier this year, is set to transform the way farmers and veterinarians monitor the reproductive status of dairy and beef cattle.

The test works by detecting specific biomolecules in the urine that are influenced by embryonic growth, offering a non-invasive and accurate method for early pregnancy detection in ruminants.

To further refine and simplify this technology, ICAR-CIRB has entered into a strategic partnership with several key organizations. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on September 5, 2024 between ICAR-CIRB, BIRAC (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council), Agrinnovate, and Techinvention, Mumbai. This collaboration will focus on improving the technology to ensure it is more accessible and user-friendly for widespread adoption in the agricultural sector.

The introduction of this urine-based test holds significant potential for enhancing reproductive management in livestock, which is a critical factor in the productivity of the dairy and beef industries. Early and accurate pregnancy diagnosis allows farmers to make informed decisions regarding breeding cycles, nutrition, and overall herd management, ultimately improving animal welfare and productivity.

Techinvention’s involvement is expected to accelerate the commercialization of this technology, bringing it to market in a more efficient and scalable way.

This collaborative effort marks a crucial step toward advancing agricultural technology in India, helping to modernize livestock management and boost the nation’s agricultural productivity.
