Starting with South - the India Meteorological Department has issued red alert in four districts of Kerala – Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad & Malappuram. It has warned of “excessively heavy” rainfall at isolated places in these regions. In addition, the weather department had issued an orange alert in five districts. Nonstop rainfall since last two days has affected railway services across the state. Kochi Airport also suspended all its operations till Sunday.
According to the state disaster management authority, at least 9 people have died in separate incidents of flooding as well as landslides. As many as 13,000 others have been shifted to relief camps.
In a major landslide on Thursday (8 August), several houses at an estate settlement in Wayanad district were washed away. Hundreds of families were moved to relief camps as rivers overflowed in Kannur, Kozhikode & Malappuram districts.
In Karnataka, many districts are currently reeling under flood-like situation and with more heavy rainfall coming up in the weekend the situation is likely to become grimmer. Heavy showers are still continuing and around 10 districts in the state are flooded by Krishna river spurt.
Meanwhile, high waves of 3.2-3.7 meters are predicted till 23:30 hours of 10th August (Saturday) along the coast of Kerala from Pozhiyoor to Kasargod. Fishermen are asked stay away from these areas till the above mentioned period.
IMD office has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coastal state of Goa for next couple of days. Goa CM Pramod Sawant said, "Heavy rainfall is likely to continue for another 2-3 days, so we appeal to people to avoid venturing into the sea. A high alert has been issued tourists and fishermen have been asked to stay away from the waters".
Mumbai weather
According to IMD, Mumbai may also witness heavy rainfall in the weekend. People have been asked to be alert and avoid going near the sea shore.
Due to presence of a Depression over Chhattisgarh and its adjoining areas, which is moving further westwards covering Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat, there will be more rainfall today and tomorrow in Gujarat. It might possibly cover Saurashtra & Kutch also. Central India will witness more showers in the upcoming days.
Weather in Delhi today
Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Northern Rajasthan may receive scattered rainfall along with thunderstorm in the weekend. On the other hand, heavy rain and thunderstorms has been forecasted for Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand today.
