Dr. Nazir Ahmad Ganai VC at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences & Technology (SKUAST) Jammu visited KJ Chaupal on February 22 to discuss the progress of crop cultivation in Jammu.
He spoke about the issues that an Indian farmer face throughout the process of farming beginning from the start to the end. He also talked about how Indian farmers fall into debt traps that lead them to kill themselves.
The vice-chancellor of SKUAST thanked the members of Krishi Jagran and spoke on many important issues related to agriculture. Apart from this, he praised the efforts that Krishi Jagran is constantly making in the field of agriculture for the past 2 decades.
He also said that India is a country full of diversity, not only culturally but also when it comes to the weather of different states. He proved his point by saying, “Rajasthan is a dry and arid region with 50 degrees centigrade, on the other hand, Ladakh is a region with -50 degrees centigrade temperature which brings a difference of 100 degrees centigrade.”
Dr. Ganai also mentioned that Ladakh, which is an arid region, lacked vegetation but the SKUAST researchers and team have changed that by cultivating crops of all kinds in protected systems.
As a result of this acceleration in crop cultivation in Ladakh, the region is soon to be the biggest exporter of agricultural products.
He mentioned that SKUAST-J has come up with 112 new and better crop varieties that produce a higher yield. SKUAST-J has also produced the highest-yielding rice variety in India, according to the VC.
