Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, has expressed his satisfaction with the notable increase in the area dedicated to pulse cultivation during this year's Kharif sowing season. During a review meeting at Krishi Bhawan, the Minister highlighted that the area under pulse cultivation, particularly for Tur (Arhar), has surged by over fifty percent.
Minister Chouhan emphasized that achieving self-sufficiency in pulse production remains a national priority. He called for concerted efforts to sustain and further this progress. "Our goal is to ensure 100 percent procurement for Urad, Arhar, and Masur across all states," he stated, underscoring the government's commitment to support pulse farmers. The Minister also stressed the importance of raising awareness among farmers about the benefits and opportunities in pulse cultivation to encourage greater participation.
During the meeting, officials briefed Minister Chouhan on various critical factors affecting the Kharif season, including the onset of the monsoon, groundwater levels, and the availability of seeds and fertilizers. The Minister reiterated the necessity of timely fertilizer availability for both Kharif and Rabi crops. He advised the Department of Fertilizers to ensure an adequate supply of DAP fertilizers in response to state demands.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, including Sanjeev Chopra, as well as representatives from the Indian Meteorological Department, Central Water Commission, and Department of Fertilizers, attended the meeting. Together, they discussed strategies to bolster agricultural productivity and address any potential challenges for the upcoming seasons.
