Various initiatives are being taken to increase the domestic sale and export of handloom and handicrafts, according to Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh. Singh said this after visiting the Handloom Expo 'Virasat' in New Delhi on August 12, 2024.
Now handloom artisans are being connected with the National Institute of Fashion Technology to enable them to introduce new designs, he said. While talking about the response of the young generation to handloom, the minister said various designs, denim, silk, etc. have been introduced. "Now handloom has become a fashion for the younger generation," he said.
Singh said India has a 90 per cent share in the overall handloom sector, with more than 35 lakh families involved in it.
Pabitra Margherita, MoS for Textiles highlighted while visiting live display of application of natural dyes in Handloom sector, that in present days the market for Natural Dyes Handloom fabrics in fashion industry started experiencing a high demand. The use of Natural Dyes by Handloom weavers imparts not only the value addition but also increase their earnings.
As a part of the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, he distributed national flags to the artisans and appealed to everyone to participate in this campaign, according to an official release.
