The Institute of Biotechnology (IBT) at Prof Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU) teamed up with the Telangana State Council of Science and Technology (TSCST) and launched a comprehensive two-week training program. Aimed at scientists from agricultural and horticultural universities, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) research institutes across the state, the program delved into the intricacies of biotechnological tools for crop improvement.
Biotech Advancements
The inaugural session witnessed IBT Director C.V. Sameer Kumar shedding light on the hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge participants would gain. The program covered an array of biotechnological techniques, including molecular markers, gene editing, tissue culture, and bioinformatics. Eminent scientists and experts, both from IBT and other institutions, will conduct insightful lectures.
Global Insights on Crop Improvement
Sean Mayes, Global Research Programme Director at ICRISAT, emphasised the integration of biotechnology with conventional breeding to foster the development of novel crop varieties. The training, extending until February 10, seeks to empower participants to harness biotechnological tools for creating disease-resistant varieties, enhancing nutritional quality, and boosting yield potential.
Research Directors Advocate Practical Focus
Director of Research (PJTSAU) P. Raghu Rami Reddy called for a more practical approach in the program, urging a focus on applying biotechnological tools for tangible crop improvement. He emphasised the importance of developing new varieties and maximising the potential of biotechnological tools.
Genomic Approaches Unveiled
Principal Scientist at ICRISAT, Manish Pandey, shared insights on genomics and genomic approaches to combat biotic and abiotic stresses on crop plants. Meanwhile, Associate Director of Research at Palem-RARS, PJTSAU, M. Malla Reddy underscored the need for integrating conventional breeding with molecular breeding, especially in the face of climate change challenges.
