On December 28-29, 2024, the Nuts and Dry Fruit Council of India (NDFC(I)) launched a groundbreaking walnut plantation initiative in Chakrata, Uttarakhand. This ambitious project marks the first introduction of grafted walnut plants in India, with 300 saplings being planted across the region. The initiative aims to enhance domestic nut production, reduce dependency on imports, and create economic opportunities for local farmers.
The programme targets increased nut production in the region and is the first phase of a larger 3-year project that will eventually involve over 1,000 farmers. The saplings, imported from Turkey’s AGRONOM horticultural company by Kalason Nursery in India, are of high-yielding varieties. The project is focused on three villages in the Chakrata region, with more than 70 farmers participating. In addition to planting the saplings, the programme offers farmers comprehensive support, including training in optimal plantation practices and care during critical growth stages.
NDFC(I) has partnered with the Walnuts and other Nut Fruit Growers Association of India (WANGAI) to promote nut cultivation across India. This collaboration envisions positioning India as a leading producer and exporter of walnuts, with plans to expand walnut cultivation in the Chakrata and Tuni regions, incorporating over 1,000 farmers into the programme.
Achin Aggarwal, Chair of the Committee for Agriculture and Farmers Connect at NDFC(I), expressed, “With this initiative, we aim to meet the growing demand for walnuts. As India moves towards a healthier lifestyle, we hope to expand walnut production. This will not only boost production but also improve the local economy, making this region a key exporter of walnuts in the coming years.”
The initiative emphasizes sustainability through continuous plantation efforts and the establishment of world-class nut nurseries in India. These nurseries will ensure farmers have easy access to high-quality grafted plants, fostering innovation and research to further improve yield and production. By boosting walnut production, this project is expected to create significant economic opportunities and new jobs for the local community.
