Weather Update: Western Disturbance Brings Rain, Snow, Cold Wave, and Dense Fog to Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh

A western disturbance is set to bring rain, snowfall, and thunderstorms to northern India, while cold wave conditions and dense fog are expected in several regions. Delhi/NCR will experience fluctuating temperatures with fog and light rain in the coming days.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall and snowfall in northern regions such as Jammu and Kashmir in the coming days, with scattered thunderstorms expected over Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Cold wave conditions are likely in Telangana and Karnataka, with dense fog affecting parts of Uttar Pradesh and other regions. Here are the details 

Western Disturbance Brings Rain and Snow

A western disturbance, characterized by a cyclonic circulation over eastern Iran, is expected to influence weather patterns in northern India. The key impacts include:

  • Rainfall and Thunderstorms: Isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning are likely over Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from January 5th to 6th.

  • Heavy Rain/Snowfall: Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad are likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall or snowfall on January 4th and 5th.

Temperature Forecast

  • Northwest India: Gradual rise of 2-3°C over the next 4 days, followed by a fall of 2-4°C.

  • Central India: No significant temperature change anticipated in the next 5 days.

  • East India: Steady temperatures for 24 hours, then a rise of 2-3°C over the following days.

  • West India: Stable temperatures over the next 5 days, except in Gujarat, where a drop of 2-3°C is expected after 3 days.

Cold Wave and Cold Day Warnings

  • Cold Wave: Likely in isolated areas of Telangana and North Interior Karnataka on January 4th.

  • Cold Day Conditions: Predicted for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and parts of West Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with isolated areas of East Uttar Pradesh also affected.

Dense Fog Alerts

  • Very Dense Fog: Expected during late night/early morning hours in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and parts of Uttar Pradesh.

  • Dense Fog: Likely in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar from January 3rd to 5th.

Weather Forecast for Delhi/NCR

Delhi and its neighboring regions are expected to experience a mix of weather conditions over the next few days. Partly cloudy skies, along with shallow to moderate fog and smog, are anticipated. There is also a possibility of dense fog in isolated areas during the early mornings. Light rain is likely on January 6th, which will be accompanied by a change in wind patterns, bringing a chill to the air.
