  • Tunisia’s Agri Ministry Launches New Support Mechanism to Boost Ag Sector & Food Security

    The European Union (EU) and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICD) have set up a new support mechanism for Tunisia's agricultural sector, aimed at helping small producers overcome increasing production costs and adapt to climate change. The ADAPT programme is being funded by the EU for €44.4 million and implemented by the Italian Development Cooperation Agency in partnership with the World Food Programme. The support mechanism will initially benefit three collectors mandated by the Office des Céréales, including two seed collectors. These collectors include the Comptoir Multiservices Agricoles -CMA, Société Mutuelle Centrale de Semences - COSEM, and Société de Semences Sélectionnées - SOSEM.

    Additional Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo flagged off a consignment of vegetable seedlings for Gurez under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP). The consignment included seedlings of tomato, brinjal, chilies, kale, saag khanyari, red cabbage, and green cabbage. In his statement, Dulloo mentioned that the department is making efforts to expand vegetable cultivation both vertically and horizontally. The consignment of seedlings to Gurez is a crucial step towards this goal. The government is committed to the development of agriculture and allied sectors in all regions of Jammu and Kashmir, and promoting vegetable cultivation can boost the socio-economic landscape of farmers.

    Farmers in the remote Kambal Danga Panchayat in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir are now opting for modern agricultural technology to thresh their wheat crops. With the help of a tractor thresher machine, the process of threshing that used to take farmers 9-10 days, now takes only a few hours, resulting in increased efficiency and productivity.
