Cotton Association Reduces Crop Estimate to 330.50 lakh Bales for 2022-23 Season
The Cotton Association of India (CAI) reduced its cotton crop output estimate for the 2022-23 season by 9.25 lakh bales to 330.50 lakh bales on January 14, citing lower production in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. According to the CAI, total cotton production in the previous season was estimated at 307.05 lakh bales. Cotton production in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka is expected to fall by 2 lakh bales each in the current season, which began on October 1, 2022, to 82.50 lakh bales, 13 lakh bales, and 22 lakh bales, respectively.

UP Govt to Increase Farmers’ Income Through Solar Energy
The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation (UPPCL) has signed a power purchase agreement with private developers (farmers) in six districts for 7 megawatt solar power generation projects as part of the Kusum Yojana in an effort to boost the income of the state's farmers. With the help of several banks, farmers will build up solar power-producing facilities on their arid or unusable farmland. The government will also offer subsidies for this.

Farmers in Bihar Struggle with Shortage of Fertilizer, High Prices of Urea
6,200 fertilizer stores were searched during this Kharif season around the state, and 117 FIRs were lodged against individuals responsible for the urea crisis. Despite the central government's claims that the state of Bihar receives an adequate supply of fertilizers, farmers in the state continue to confront a urea scarcity, according to the reports.

1,023 Marathwada Farmers Died by Suicide in 2022, Up From 887 in 2021
Recent news reports revealed that 1,023 farmer suicides were reported in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra in 2022, up from 887 cases the year before. Back in 2001, at least one farmer’s suicide was witnessed in the region, which includes the districts of Jalna, Aurangabad, Parbhani, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, Osmanabad, and Beed.

Kazakhstan President Stresses on Global Food & Water Security at Voice of Global South Summit
On January 12 & 13, India hosted a two-day Voice of the Global South Summit. The Summit was held virtually, with a total of ten sessions. It was attended by leaders and ministers from 125 countries in the Global South. President Tokayev urged all countries to concentrate their efforts on meeting the SDGs. "Therefore, we consider it important to establish the United Nations (UN) Regional Center on SDGs for Central Asia and Afghanistan in Kazakhstan.
