  • Climate Change Threatens Paddy Farmers in Kuttanad: Decreasing Yield & Increasing Challenges

The current 'puncha' crop season has been harsh for the majority of farmers due to a significant drop in paddy output. The average production reduced from roughly three tonnes per acre during a regular 'puncha' season to two tonnes. The low crop yield has largely been observed from areas that grew Uma, the region's most popular rice type. 80-90% of fields are planted with the cultivar. Extreme weather events, according to P.J. Prasad, an experienced paddy farmer from Edathua in Kuttanad, are making it impossible to cultivate the crop. "Farmers suffered losses due to torrential downpours during the previous puncha season." This time, though, the crop has been harmed by a lack of rain. I used to harvest between 2.5 and 3 tonnes of rice every acre. "The average yield dropped to 2.2 tonnes per acre this season," adds Prasad.

  • HAFED Chief Backtracks on Promised Benefits to Wheat Farmers: Taken a U-turn

The HAFED chairman had offered farmers relief by announcing that commercial purchases of wheat crop will begin, ensuring additional benefits for farmers, but retracted his decision on Friday evening. Notably, while visiting grain markets in several districts in Haryana, Bhagat said in Kaithal district on Friday that HAFED will acquire wheat crop at a commercial price that is Rs 10 higher per quintal than the government's minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 2,125. When approached, Bhagat stated, "We were hoping to give Rs 10 extra per quintal to wheat growers who bring better quality wheat to grain markets. However, due to lustre loss, in which the grain loses its lustre, they were unable to provide a higher-grade wheat crop. As a result, the decision has been reversed for the time being.”

  • Vietnam's Bountiful Harvest: Fruit & Vegetable Exports Set to Soar to USD 4 bn in 2023

Vegetables & fruits were one of the few agricultural goods in Vietnam that increased in export turnover in the first quarter of 2023. Fruit and vegetable exports reached USD 982 million in the first quarter of this year, increasing 16.2% from the same time in 2022. According to Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetables Association, China reopening the border will be essential in assisting Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports to rise in the first quarter. Vietnam's fruit and vegetable shipments to China fell precipitously in 2022 as a result of the country's Zero Covid policy.

  • PAU Experts Link Green Leafy Vegetables Consumption to Reduced Anaemia Risk

Green leafy vegetables (GLVs) are a good source of vitamins and minerals, however the average daily consumption of GLVs in Punjab is about 24 g/person, which is less than the recommended amount. The shortage of GLVs throughout the summer season prevents daily consumption. Even if they are available, the increased pricing may deter consumption. According to doctors, this increases the risk of anaemia and bone-related diseases in women. During the winter months, GLVs are available for a lower cost. Many people, however, are unable to incorporate these into their diet due to ignorance and a lack of information. The best technique is to dry and preserve these vegetables at their peak availability time in the winter.
