  • Wheat Crop in Punjab and Haryana Faces Damage from Harsh Weather

    The wheat-growing states of Punjab and Haryana are facing a problem with the unnaturally high temperatures in February, along with the gusty winds and hailstorms that blew over Punjab and Haryana. The wheat crop has reached near maturity and is already damaged by the hailstorm and strong winds. Moreover, the strong winds have also flattened the standing wheat crop in a few districts in Punjab and Haryana as of Thursday. On Thursday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh saying that "very widespread rainfall with the thunderstorm, lightning, gusty winds, and hailstorm is very possible over these states for the next several days."

     

  • Rajasthan Governor Pitches Millets Cultivation to Provide Nutritious Food for Growing Population

    On Thursday, Rajasthan’s Governor Kalraj Mishra pitched for the cultivation of millets at all levels in order to provide nutritious food to the expanding population of the world. He said that regular consumption of nutrition-rich cereals nourishes the body's immunity, so more and more efforts should be made to publicize the products of coarse cereals among the general public. Mishra was addressing the convocation ceremony of the Shri Karna Narendra Agricultural University of Jobner virtually on Thursday in Raj Bhawan.

     

  • Odisha CM Advises Fisheries Officials to Act as Facilitators & Inspire Fish Farming for Income Boost

    On Wednesday, Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik advised the newly recruited assistant fisheries officers to act as facilitators and motivate people to take up fisheries and help boost their income. Saying that Odisha is presently in the fourth position in the country in fish production, he called upon them to work in a mission mode to help move the state from number four to the number one position in fish production. He said, “We should not be satisfied with incremental changes. We have to go for transformational changes if we want to see Odisha as a developed state.” He also said that he hoped that the new officers will work faithfully and transform the lives of fish farmers.

     

  • Global Millets Conference to Be Inaugurated by PM Modi On March 18

    According to a government statement: This two-day global conference will have sessions on all the important matters regarding millets like awareness and promotion of millets among producers, consumers, and other stakeholders along with the health and nutritional aspects of millets, market linkages, millets value chain development, and research and development. In addition to this, the statement also added that the conference will be attended by the agriculture ministers of several countries, health experts, international scientists, nutritionists, start-up leaders, and other stakeholders. Furthermore, in line with the Prime Minister's observation to make the occasion of IYM 2023 a 'people's movement' and position India as the 'global hub for millets', all central government ministries/departments, states/UTs, exporters, farmers, start-ups, retail businesses, and other stakeholders, are being involved to assist and spread awareness on the benefits of millets for the cultivator, consumer, and the climate. 

     

  • Maharashtra Govt Promises Increased Onion Farmer Subsidy, But Farmer's ‘Long March’ Continues

    The Maharashtra government plans to enhance the per quintal subsidy promised to onion farmers and to form a special committee to ensure that the Forest Rights Act is effectively implemented in the state. These choices were made during the Thursday meeting between farmers' long march representatives and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. As confirmed by the farmer’s representative, the march will continue to stay where it was in Vasind in the Thane district. While the talks with the Chief Minister were positive, the march is expected to continue until the promises made by the administration started with the actual implementation of the work.
