The residents of Tripura's bio-villages received a welcome surprise on Sunday. They woke up to the news that PM Modi had praised them for their reliance on renewable energy sources to combat climate change.

During Mann ki Baat program PM Modi stated “You must have heard about bio-villages, but some villages of Tripura have ascended to the level of bio-villages 2.0. A bio-village 2.0 emphasizes how to minimize the damage caused by natural disasters. Full attention is given to improving the quality of life of the people through various measures. There is a focus on solar energy, biogas, beekeeping, and bio-fertilizers. Overall, a bio-village 2.0 is going to lend a lot of strength to the campaign against climate change."

The Tripura bio-village 2.0 project, which began in 2018-19 for sustainable development, has been completed in five villages in the Sepahijala and West Tripura districts. Six more villages in the districts of Sepahijala, West Tripura, Gomati, and Dhalai will be converted into full-fledged bio-villages in the near future. So far, the project has benefitted or covered more than 700 homes. Indeed, the actions undertaken thus far have begun to produce an additional monthly income of Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 per household in these communities.

Daspara is one of the first bio-villages built-in Tripura based on the bio-village 2.0 idea to achieve sustainable development goals. According to a TREDA official, work has begun on establishing 10 bio-village solar hamlets, particularly in tribal-dominated regions, to push solar energy aggressively.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday for emphasizing the country's first bio-village in his monthly radio address 'Mann Ki Baat' (October 30). The Tripura Renewable Energy Development Authority (TREDA) has developed the country's first bio-village in Daspara, in the Sepahijala district, around 25 kilometers from here, in partnership with the Bio-Technology department.

Saha in interaction with the press said that "I am delighted to see the Prime Minister highlighting and promoting the state's first bio-village, work on which began about two years ago. The concept of a bio-village is environmentally friendly. The irrigation and lighting systems are solar-powered."

Former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb also congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for recognizing the state's successful execution of the first bio-village.
