Pig Farming is Gaining All Time High Popularity in the State

The Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana since its inception is promoting livestock farming amongst the youth especially the educated unemployed as a means of livelihood security.

In the continuation of these efforts, the university organized one weekly training program on Specialized Pig farming as a viable means of self-employment and nutritional security for farmers.

A total of 43 candidates including 2 farm women attended the program from different districts of Punjab and Rajasthan. Dr.H K Verma, Director Extension Education, told that the livestock sector has bunches of options to adopt like dairy farming, poultry farming, goat farming, fish farming and pig farming, Value addition of livestock production, feed manufacturing, etc. for all sections of farmers viz, landless, small to large farmers through various modus operandi.

One can adopt as per likeliness and resources available. It is pertinent to mention that to promote pig farming in the state Vet Varsity is patting the rural innovative pig farmers through Chief Minister Award at its annual March Pashu palan mela to be held in March 2020.

Dr.S K kansal, Head of the Department interacted with farmers with the words that utmost care should be taken to start a farm especially with respect to selection of breed and preventive measures to check the losses. He encouraged the farmers to adopt scientific practices emphasized during the training program and also gave away the certificates to the trainees.

Dr.Jaswinder Singh, Technical Coordinator, of this training told that trainees were apprised with various topics like breeds, breeding management, shed design, weather management, vaccination protocols, diseases and their prevention, value addition of pork, economics, etc.

He further told that besides the theoretical lectures practical training on the handling of pigs, measuring temperature, signs of healthy animals were also provided to the trainees. Dr.Bilawal Singh and Dr.Bharti Coordinated the training program and proposed the vote of thanks. Trainees hailed the efforts of veterinary universities and were satisfied with the knowledge and facilities provided.
