The 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists began on the 2nd of August and today is the last day of this forum. Dr Smita Sirohi, the Organizing Secretary, states, "Agricultural Economists have kept the tradition of sharing new knowledge and innovative ideas in the field of Agricultural Economics alive with this triennial conference."
The theme for 2024 is "Transformation Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Systems," the conference brought together over 1,000 delegates from 75 countries to address pressing challenges in global agriculture.
Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi inaugurated the event. He emphasized India's deep-rooted agricultural heritage, dating back thousands of years. He highlighted the country's rich tradition of scientific agriculture, as exemplified by ancient texts like 'Krishi Parashar.' India's robust agricultural research and education ecosystem, comprising over 100 research institutes, 500 colleges, and 700 Krishi Vigyan Kendras, further underscores its commitment to agricultural advancement.
India's Vision for Sustainable Agriculture
The Prime Minister outlined India's ambitious plans for sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture. He highlighted the successful implementation of chemical-free natural farming on a large scale and the government's focus on developing a comprehensive support system for farmers.
A key achievement mentioned was the development of nearly 1,900 new climate-resilient crop varieties in the last decade. India's agricultural diversity, with distinct qualities across 15 agro-climatic zones, was also emphasized as a crucial factor in ensuring global food security.
Addressing Global Challenges Through Innovation
The conference provided a platform to discuss innovative solutions to global agricultural challenges. Modi highlighted the development of rice varieties that require 25% less water and the emergence of black rice as a superfood as examples of India's contributions to sustainable agriculture.
The Prime Minister's address focused on India's commitment to leading the way in sustainable agriculture and its willingness to share its knowledge and experiences with the global community. The conference served as a crucial forum for experts, policymakers, and researchers to collaborate and find solutions to the agricultural sector's pressing issues.
By hosting the ICAE, India has positioned itself as a global leader in agriculture, demonstrating its dedication to transforming the sector while preserving its rich heritage.
