India with support from the neighbouring countries, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Pakistan won the global bid in Brisbane in 2012 to host the prestigious 36th International Geological Congress (36th IGC) in the year 2020. Geological Survey of India (GSI) was identified as the official nodal agency for organizing the event.

Numerous technical sessions, symposia, plenary talks, public lectures, workshops, scientific meetings and 62 field trips were ready on our activity slate. A couple of pre-Congress field trips were actually conducted before the pandemic lockdown was officially announced. One of the field parties made geological discoveries in the central India caves and published a stratigraphically important paper in a leading International journal.

Deferment of the Congress was announced initially to August 2020 and then to November 2021. However, the robust Corona virus showed no sign of abatement. Therefore, an attenuated 36th IGC was proposed in a Virtual Mode that got the approval of the Government of India and concurrence of the IUGS Executive Committee.

The Ministry of Mines (MoM), Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, and the Indian National Sciences Academy (INSA) are hosting the attenuated and reformatted 36th International Geological Congress during 20-22 March, 2022 on Virtual platform, with the support of India’s neighbouring countries - Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

The event is expected to be witnessed by several thousand participants from all over the world. They will be greatly benefitted by the Panel discussion on a very contemporary topic, and eight illuminating talks delivered by some of the leading geoscientists of the world.

The 3-day Virtual Congress can be exploited by the geoscientists, technocrats, academicians, policy makers and entrepreneurs for intellectual benefits as well as policy making.

In order to create a new browsing experience for the participants, 36th IGC has launched this new website. Further, to encourage and facilitate the participation of the maximum number of geoscientists from across the globe, 36th IGC has kept the Congress registration free.
