Every year on April 6th, Tomato Day is observed. Tomatoes are grown on nearly 80,000 hectares in India each year, accounting for 1.5 percent of the world's total area. The average yield per hectare is about 10 tonnes, which pales in comparison to the global average of 17.4 tonnes (FAO Production Year Book, 1982).
Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and the Delhi Union Territory are the four states that makeup Maharashtra. Karnataka is responsible for 25% of all processed tomato production. Among the various products, tomato ketchup is the most popular. Did you know that there are over 10,000 different tomato varieties?
Let us learn more about tomatoes and their various varieties on Fresh Tomato Day. The average tomato price in India was Rs 67 per kg, which was 63% higher than the previous year. According to the Agriculture Ministry, tomato Kharif (summer) production in the current year is 69.52 lakh tonnes, down from 70.12 lakh tonnes last year.
India is the world's second-largest country in terms of population (1.38 billion people) and tomato production, with more than 20 million tonnes produced in the fiscal year 2019-20. A well-known Indian proverb goes, "No tomato, No Cooking," but 99 percent of tomatoes are now consumed fresh. Massive post-harvest losses in India.
According to a government report, 12.4 percent of tomatoes are lost. Policies that could be implemented include encouraging mechanized harvesting, subsidizing transportation costs incurred while delivering tomatoes to processing plants, and establishing a minimum support price based on the actual cost of processed tomato cultivation.
