November 14th is celebrated as World Diabetes Day to raise public awareness about diabetes, its treatment, prevention, and symptoms. This day also reminds us how important is it to have a healthy lifestyle for a good future.

At present, 10 out of 100 adults are suffering from diabetes and kids are also being diagnosed with this.

World Diabetes Day is the world's largest diabetes campaign, drawing attention to issues critical to the diabetes community and keeping diabetes in the public and political spotlight.

Objective of celebrating World Diabetes Day

The goal of celebrating the day is to promote IDF’s efforts throughout the year, as well as the importance of taking coordinated and concrete actions to combat diabetes as a critical health issue worldwide. As a result, the day raises awareness of diabetes issues and provides diabetes education to the patients and their family members.

The theme for World Diabetes Day 2022

IDF decides the theme for World Diabetes Day and the year 2022-23 theme is “ACCESS TO DIABETES CARE”. Access to diabetes care is still an issue for most people around the world and diabetes patients also require ongoing care and support to manage their condition and avoid complications.

The history behind the World Diabetes Day

14th November is marked as the Birthday of Sir Frederick Banting for the discovery of insulin with Charles Best in 1922. World Health Organization and International Diabetes Federation started celebrating World Diabetes Day in 1991 to aware people of this disease which leads to a slow death.

What is Diabetes?

A medical condition under which your blood glucose levels or your blood sugar levels rises is known as Diabetes mellitus. Diabetes occurs in the body when the pancreas gland of the body is unable to produce insulin or when the body is unable to properly utilize the insulin produced. It is a chronic illness. Let us explain that insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, a leaf-like gland. 

Types of Diabetes

There are 3 types of Diabetes;

  • Type-1

  • Type-2

  • Gestational Diabetes

Symptoms of Diabetes 

-Increased hunger

- Thirst increases

- Loss of weight

- Excessive urination

- Excessive tiredness

- Wounds that do not heal

As a result, World Diabetes Day is observed every year on November 14th and is the world's largest Diabetes campaign to raise awareness about diabetes and its treatment, and to educate people about it.
