Mild tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR on September 11, 2024, due to an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Pakistan, with tremors felt in cities like Islamabad and Lahore at around 12:58 pm. In addition to Delhi-NCR, several other Indian states, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir, experienced the tremors. Afghanistan was also impacted by the seismic activity.
This marks the second time in the past two weeks that Delhi and its surrounding areas have experienced earthquake tremors. Earthquakes occur due to the movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface.
There are seven tectonic plates that constantly move, and when they collide, rub against each other, or shift apart, the ground shakes, causing an earthquake. The Richter scale, also known as the Richter magnitude scale, is used to measure the intensity of earthquakes.
Authorities have not reported any major damage or casualties so far, but residents across the affected areas were left shaken by the tremors.
