Eid-ul-Fitr is an Islamic festival celebrated by Muslims around the world. It marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk nearly for a month. The date to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr varies each year as it depends on the sighting of the new moon, but it generally falls in the tenth month of the Islamic Lunar calendar.
The International Astronomy Center has announced that Islamic countries are likely to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on 22nd April 2023 on the occasion of the first day of Shawwal. However, it would not be possible to sport a crescent with a naked telescope or eye from all parts of Australia and Asia. The Gulf report states that it may be possible to spot a crescent with the naked eye in some parts of Islamic countries. The report also adds that if the moon is sighted on Friday (21st April 2023) then Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on 22nd April 2023 (Saturday).
On the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, Muslims use to gather in mosques and/or open spaces for Eid prayers. They share food and gifts with friends and family and show the act of charity. This day is said as a Day of Reconciliation, Forgiveness, and Celebration.
On this day, people express gratitude to Allah for the blessing received, to renew one’s commitment to a life of devotion and faith.
Additionally, there are several other traditional customs like the giving of Zakat-al-Fitr or Eid-al-Fitr where people show a form of charity by giving gifts, food, or sweets to needy and poor people. It is generally celebrated before the Eid prayers to ensure that everyone has to eat and celebrate the holy day.
Food is an important part of the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration. Some popular dishes include kebabs, biryani, samosas, ras malai, and sheer khurma.
In the end, Eid-ul-Fitr is an occasion for expressing gratitude, values of faith, and generosity. So, let’s come together and celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr 2023 on 22nd April with utmost joy.
