Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced a new facility, allowing individuals to self-correct common personal details such as name, date of birth, gender, nationality, father's or mother's name, marital status, spouse's name, date of joining, and date of leaving. This self-correction can be done without needing employer verification or EPFO approval for subscribers whose Universal Account Number (UAN) was issued after October 1, 2017, when Aadhaar linking became mandatory.

Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who launched the new service on Saturday, emphasized that no supporting documents are required for these updates. However, if the UAN was issued before October 1, 2017, the employer will be responsible for making corrections without requiring EPFO’s approval. In cases where the UAN is not linked to Aadhaar, any correction will need to be submitted to the employer for verification and then forwarded to EPFO for approval.

Previously, subscribers had to submit correction requests online along with supporting documents, which were then verified by their employers before being forwarded to EPFO. This process, called the joint declaration, often took a considerable amount of time. In FY25, 8 lakh requests were forwarded to EPFO by employers, but only 40% were sent within five days, and the average processing time was 28 days. With the new self-correction facility, around 45% of cases will be resolved immediately using Aadhaar OTP, and the remaining 50% will still be processed through the employer.

Additionally, the new system addresses pending cases, with about 3.9 lakh requests awaiting employer action. Subscribers can now delete these pending requests and directly self-approve corrections.

The EPFO has also simplified the process for transfer claims, where subscribers can now file their requests for transferring EPF accounts during job changes directly with EPFO using Aadhaar OTP, without needing employer intervention. This is expected to significantly reduce processing time and improve the efficiency of the system.

The Labour Ministry highlighted that KYC and profile issues contribute to 27% of grievances among EPFO members. The introduction of the self-correction and transfer claim facilities is expected to reduce these issues, especially for large employers who handle a large volume of such requests.

In FY25, approximately 1.3 crore transfer claims were filed, and the new system will enable more than 94% of these claims to be processed directly by EPFO, reducing the turnaround time.
