The Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, has inaugurated the G20 Technical Workshop on "Climate Resilient Agriculture" today. This three-day event, taking place from September 4 to 6, 2023, in Hyderabad, India, aims to convene experts from across the globe to address the pressing challenges of climate change and foster cooperation in enhancing countries' abilities to tackle these issues.
The workshop commenced with an Inaugural Session graced by Ms. Shobha Karandlaje, Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The first day of discussions focused on "Climate Resilient Agriculture Research Needs and Innovations." Eminent speakers shared insights from their respective countries, shedding light on their experiences in achieving agricultural resilience in the face of climate change. They also highlighted scientific and innovative solutions required to mitigate emerging challenges and reduce uncertainties within the agricultural food systems.
Distinguished dignitaries, including foreign delegates from G20 member states, representatives from Guest-invited countries, and International Organizations (IOs), as well as senior officials from various ministries, attended the event. The technical sessions delved into key issues of agriculture research, particularly the impact of climate change and sustainable agricultural development on a global scale.
Minister Shobha Karandlaje emphasized the profound influence of climate change on agriculture, noting that G20 nations are already experiencing its effects. She expressed hope that the recommendations stemming from this workshop would guide efforts toward achieving climate-resilient agriculture.
Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary DARE, and DG ICAR, underscored the vulnerability of Indian agriculture to climate change and variability. He cited the rising frequency of climatic extremes as a growing threat to agricultural production and food security, both in India and worldwide. Dr. Pathak stressed the significance of ICAR's role in addressing climate change challenges.
Dr. S.K. Chaudhari, DDG(NRM), ICAR, and chairman of the Technical Workshop for Climate-Resilient Agriculture, urged G20 nations to take a leadership role in developing climate-resilient practices for sustainable agriculture, thereby enhancing global food security. He highlighted the demonstration of location-specific Climate Resilient Technologies (CRTs) in India's vulnerable districts as a crucial step in building awareness and capacity among farmers and stakeholders.
Dr. V.K. Singh, Director of ICAR-CRIDA, expressed gratitude to dignitaries and delegates for their participation in the workshop, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in addressing climate change's impact on agriculture.
The workshop aligns with the theme of the G20 Indian Presidency, "One Earth, One Family, and One Future," emphasizing unity and harmony for a better world. Over the next two days, the technical sessions will explore topics such as upscaling Climate Resilient Agriculture Case studies and Experiences, Policy, Finance, and Institutional Needs for Climate Resilient Agriculture.
In addition to the technical discussions, delegates will have the opportunity to explore the rich scientific research and development initiatives in the field of Millets, a significant focus in India as part of the International Year of Millets 2023. Furthermore, they will immerse themselves in the vibrant Indian culture by witnessing traditional dance performances and exploring traditional Indian products at Shilparamam, Hyderabad.
On September 6, 2023, delegates will visit ICAR-CRIDA Hayathnagar Research Farm, where they will receive an overview of crop management and field farming practices. The Department, in coordination with local authorities, has put in place comprehensive safety and security measures to ensure the delegates' well-being. The event will conclude with delegates returning to their respective countries on September 6 and 7, 2023.
