GADVASU Conducts Skill Upgradation Program on Veterinary Surgery

A five day skill upgradation program on “Small Animal Orthopaedic and Soft Tissue Surgery” was conducted at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. Fourteen field veterinary practitioners from 6 states including Himachal Pradesh, Orissa, Chandigarh, Karnataka, Kerala and Punjab participated in the training program.

A five-day skill up-gradation program on “Small Animal Orthopaedic and Soft Tissue Surgery” was conducted at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. Fourteen field veterinary practitioners from 6 states including Himachal Pradesh, Orissa, Chandigarh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Punjab participated in the training program. The training was conducted under the aegis of the All India Network Program on “Diagnostic imaging and management of surgical conditions in animals (AINP-DIMSCA)” and was sponsored by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Dr. Jitender Mohindroo, Principal Investigator and Head said that the department is committed to human resource development under the project and as Centre of Advanced Faculty Training. He further informed that the course module was designed keeping in mind the basic needs of the general veterinary practitioners and surgeons. The participants were given hands-on training on orthopedic and soft tissue surgical procedures like intramedullary pinning, bone plating, cross pinning, femur head neck excision, and soft tissue procedures like neutering of dogs, gastrointestinal and urinary tract surgery, eye surgery, dental scaling, and laser surgery.

Dr. Tarunbir Singh, co-coordinator of the training program said that GADVASU has the technical know-how and expertise in basic and advanced surgical procedures and training on orthopedic surgery was the need of the hour. We get many patients with fractures and soft tissue affections and the sole aim of this program was to upgrade the skills of veterinarians and private practitioners, he added.  In this training, a variety of clinical surgeries were demonstrated to the participants along with practice on artificial bone models. The participants were also encouraged to consult literature in the Department and University library and were provided with various e-books and reading material.

Dr. Parkash Singh Brar, Dean College of Veterinary Science, said that the Surgery department of the University is among the best in the country and the faculty is trained from the reputed institutes of the world. The department has maintained its reputation and status of the Centre of Advanced Faculty Training since 1994.
