The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in West Garo Hills has initiated an empowering program for farm women by creating Nutri Gardens in villages within the Gambegre Block. This project, named NARI (Nutri Sensitive Agricultural Resources and Innovations), aims to enhance family nutrition by promoting family farms. It focuses on the skill development of women and the promotion of dietary diversity.
Anaemia, a common issue in the Garo Hills due to dietary deficiencies, is a key concern that this initiative aims to address. Families can significantly improve their health by cultivating and consuming nutritious crops. The Nutri Gardens are designed to provide a reliable source of iron-rich and diverse vegetables, thereby contributing to better overall family health.
To kickstart the initiative, ICAR-KVK West Garo Hills recently conducted a training program on 'Scientific Nursery Management in Vegetable Crop' in the village of Aminda Simsang. The program featured method demonstrations on the use of organic micronutrients, specifically Arka Vegetable Special, to enhance plant growth and yield. The demonstration aimed to equip farm women with the knowledge and skills needed to manage their Nutri Gardens effectively.
In addition to the training, ICAR-KVK experts distributed essential micronutrients and vegetable seeds to the participants. These seeds, which included okra, cowpea, and ridge gourd, were sourced from the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) in Bengaluru, a leading research institute in horticultural crops in India. By providing these resources, ICAR-KVK aims to ensure the successful establishment and maintenance of the Nutri Gardens.
The initiative's progress is being closely monitored by KVK scientists, who collect feedback from the participants to ensure the project's success. The training program saw the participation of 45 farm women, highlighting the community's keen interest in improving their nutritional intake through sustainable farming practices.
This initiative by ICAR-KVK West Garo Hills is a significant step towards addressing dietary deficiencies and empowering women in the region. Nutri Gardens are set to play a crucial role in enhancing family nutrition and overall health in the Garo Hills by promoting the cultivation of nutritious crops.
